In the heart of downtown San Jose’s SOFA District you could easily pass right by MACLA’s understated storefront and not have a clue that there’s a powerful world of visual arts, performing, and literary arts inside. More than 50 programs are produced annually at MACLA, showcasing established and emerging artists who are passionately involved in the Latino aesthetic, experience and history.

Performances include hip-hop, modern dance, and spoken word. Engaging youth arts education programs are an essential component. Equally engaging is MACLA’s Community Access Program, providing artist incubation and development strategies that focus on artists of color who make up the first truly multicultural generation in Silicon Valley. When I visited MACLA, I was blown away by MACLA’s Low Rider art exhibit—that put an entirely new artistic-spin on custom Low Rider car rims.

Join correspondent, Tom Wilmer at MACLA on South First Street in downtown San Jose, for a captivating conversation with MACLA’s Executive Director, Anjee Helstrop-Alvarez, and Joey Reyes, Curator of Engagement and Dialogue.

You are invited to subscribe to the Lowell Thomas Award-winning travel show, Journeys of Discovery with Tom Wilmer featured on NPR.ORG’s Podcast Directory, NPR One (App), stitcher.com, iTunes, player.fm (UK) and numerous other podcast sites around the world.
