Kosrae’s WWII legacy of War Relics in South Pacific

Imagine a tropical isle in the midst of the Pacific, replete with a steep towering volcanic peak (dubbed The Sleeping Lady), mangroves, rain forests and lush coconut palms shading the sandy shores. Kosrae, a mere five degrees north of the equator, located mid-way between the Hawaiian Islands (3,000 miles southwest of Honolulu) and Asia. This is a place where traditional dugout canoes are still common. You will also find numerous relics from WWII. Early explorers noted the island, some made contact and spent time with the islanders. 19th Century whalers came to the island of Kosrae because of its abundance of fresh food and water, while traders, scoundrels and beachcombers followed in the whalers’ wake.
