Back in 1961, Dick Cabela, operating out of his garage in Western Nebraska tried to make a go of it selling fishing fies via magazine and newspaper ads. Only tiny nibbles at first, so he decided to give them away and make his money via shipping and handling. And that’s how Cabela’s Sporting Goods chain got its start. His business boomed and he was soon joined by brother, Jim Cabela. Their first retail store in Sidney, Nebraska remains as the corporate mother ship, but today Cabela’s Sporting Goods, with gross revenue in the billions, is pushing toward 60 retail operations around America and Canada. Cabela’s simultaneously runs a multi-million dollar online Cabela’s operation and annually ships millions of catalogs to more than 120 countries. Come along for a visit to the mammoth Cabela’s Mother Ship in Sidney, Nebraska, It’s akin to an outdoor enthusiasts’ Disneyland, and it’s one of Nebraska’s top tourist destinations.
